Slovakia commemorates 75th Anniversary of National Uprising

A military parade, the burial of an unknown soldier at a remembrance hall of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) Memorial in Banska Bystrica, and a concert in the State Opera are among the top events marking the 75th anniversary of SNP in Banska Bystrica on Thursday. It marks the day in 1944 when an uprising against German troops and their allies who were ruling Slovakia started. The centre of the uprising was Banská Bystrica in Central Slovakia.

The uprising was crushed at the end of October 1944. Its military leaders and many soldiers and officers were sent to Nazi concentration camps where many were executed. Partisans took refugee in the mountains and continued their guerilla-style fight until early 1945.
