Threats, bribes and blackmailing

Controversial businessman Marián Kočner and former prosecutor general Dobroslav Trnka allegedly discussed blackmailing Jaroslav Haščák, head of the Penta financial group, indicates an audio recording of their alleged discussion published by the Denník N daily. Moreover, according to the alleged recording, in 2011 Haščák and Kočner bribed MPs to vote for Trnka, so that he could be re-elected as the Prosecutor General. However, Trnka was not elected, with only one vote missing.

"Why did you blackmail Haščák?," Kočner allegedly said to Trnka in the recording, continuing "You know he is a friend of mine and that he helped you to buy MPs, when you were set to become Prosecutor General. Unfortunately, there was one vote missing, however, he (Haščák) was the one who gave one million Euro for you, exactly as I gave one million Euro. It is not my fault we missed out by one vote, you were supposed to manage the votes from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union, which gave none." According to Denník N, Kočner, suspected of ordering the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, threatened Trnka with physical elimination and stated that his son's days were numbered.

The Denník N daily has reported that it has received a 70-minute recording of the conversation from the summer of 2014. It was allegedly made by Kočner and is linked to Trnka's alleged attempt to blackmail Haščák by using a recording of a conversation that took place in the conspiracy flat made infamous by the Gorilla case.

Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová believes that the recording will not be ignored without a quick reaction from competent organs. "Sadly, the worst ideas and indications on the functioning of the rule of law in the recent past are being confirmed," said Čaputová.

The Foundation for Stopping Corruption called on Trnka, who is currently a regular Prosecutor, to step down from his post and also called on Jaroslav Čižnár, Prosecutor General, to take action against all those suspected of cooperation with Kočner.

The co-owner of the Penta financial group Jaroslav Haščák is distancing himself from all "supposed activities" with which he should be associated. According to he TASR press agency the police sent the recording for an expert examination.
