Overlooked wife in the spotlight

On Friday, 30^th September, the exhibition entitled “The wasteland” was opened in the Peter Michal Bohun gallery in Liptovsky Mikulas, northern Slovakia. The show presents the life of Matrena Makovicka, the wife of Leo Tolstoy’s personal doctor Dusan Makovicky. The love story between a Russian girl and her husband, 23 years her senior, is nothing close to a fairy tale. The exhibition sheds light on key moments in Matrena’s life who has been constantly overlooked due to the position and fame of her husband. It is possible to see four triptychs mapping the life of the widowed single mother by artist Katarina Hladekova in Liptovsky Mikulas until January 2023.
