The leader of the strongest governing party Smer-SD Robert Fico wants to lead the party into the 2020 general election. Fico, the former PM, announced his plan on Friday when he first talked to media after his party's failure to win in the European Parliament election, which is the party's first election loss in more than decade. Moreover, Fico sees no reason for any personnel earthquake in Smer-SD.
Fico denied reports brought by the Pravda daily that he had been under the care of doctors in Israel over the past few days. The Pravda daily recently reported that Fico was under the care of the best heart specialists in Israel, citing two senior sources from Slovakia and Israel in support of this information.
Fico also declined to comment on information concerning an extraordinary party congress or speculation that Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini might run for the post of the party's chair. Nevertheless, Fico announced that he is launching a discussion within the party. PM Pellegrini said that the party is in good condition and praised Fico for launching a discussion on the party's future.
Political Scientist Pavol Baboš does not believe that replacing the leader would increase the party's numbers. However, Baboš said that if the leader of Smer-SD was not changed, there were indications that the parties numbers would continue to decline. "It is up to the party's members to choose their path," he said.
