Council of epidemiologists against mass testing

The Council of epidemiologists do not recommend another round of nation-wide mass-testing in the first weekend of December, as proposed by Prime Minister Igor Matovič (OLaNO) on Monday. Although they have praised the results of the recent mass testing in terms of halting the spread of coronavirus infection, they argue that another round would uselessly exhaust the resources of already tired medical staff. Instead, in their official statement issued on Tuesday night they are suggesting regular and targeted testing of risk groups such as people living in localities with high incidence, teachers, patients, medical personnel, social workers etc. Moreover, they suggest preparing a better communication strategy, one that explains the meaning of the testing, which should furthermore be voluntary and accessible at mobile testing points.

Health Minister Marek Krajčí said he doesn't want to push through the mass testing at any cost, however, he stressed the need to seek ways to detect those who are infected. He also pointed out that the opinion of the Council of epidemiologists needs to be taken in consideration.

The Council of epidemiologist is an advisory body at the Health Ministry.
