Number of heart transplants in Slovakia stagnates

The number of heart transplantations in the Slovak Republic is stagnating in recent years at about twenty per year, which is far from the number of patients waiting for a new heart. Eva Goncalvesová, the head of the heart failure and transplantation department at the National Cardiovascular Diseases Institute (NUSCH) stated at a press conference on Tuesday. The main reason is the lack of donors, she reported. "Each successful transplantation program depends on the identification of a potential donor," she said. The range of experience and also the results of the heart transplantation program in NUSCH are, according to the head physician, comparable to the most advanced similar facilities in Europe.
