Austria and Slovakia “share opinions” on migration

Prime ministers of the Visegrad (V4) group including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia met with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz in Budapest on Thursday. Kurz stressed that during its upcoming six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, Austria's priority would be security and protection policy with a special emphasis on fighting illegal migration. Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini stated that the presidencies of neighbouring countries - Austria's of the Council of the EU and Slovakia's of the V4 - provided a very good opportunity for coordination. "Thank God that we share opinions on many essential and difficult issues, at least as far as migration is concerned," stated the Slovak prime minister, adding that Slovakia's priority is a secure and strong Europe. "We're taking over the presidency in a relatively sensitive political period, with a lot of questions being raised in Europe, and we want to be a constructive partner here, coming up with constructive draft measures," underlined the Slovak prime minister, adding that the V4 countries do not simply want to receive instructions from Brussels. As countries that have undergone a difficult journey and rank as economic drivers today, they have the right to speak about their vision of a world in which the protection of external borders is an absolute priority for the upcoming months, said Pellegrini.
