Slovakia in ecological debt from Wednesday

As of Wednesday 22 May, Slovakia will live on ecological debt, which means that the country has reached the point in 2019 up until which it could exploit natural resources without causing any damage to the Earth. This means that Slovaks need 2.6 Earths annually to sustain their lifestyle. Last year it took the country five days longer to reach the "overshoot day", as it took place on 27 May. "Our behaviour is irresponsible towards our children," said Miroslava Plassmann, head of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Slovakia. She explained that Slovakia's problems are mainly intensive agriculture and increasing logging, adding that Slovak lawmakers don't pay enough attention to the issue. The Global Footprint Network annually publishes the overshoot days for individual countries and the world. The EU has been living on ecological debt since May 10, 2019. The global overshoot day should come at the end of July.
