Burned village Kalište remembered

At the weekend, a commemoration event marking the 74th anniversary of the end of World War II took place in Kalište, a municipality in the Banská Bystrica region, which was burnt down during the war. "We must remember how terrible and frightening the consequences of ideologies spreading hate are. We must remember that if plenty of people agree that a certain group is a source of our suffering and frustration it leads to human tragedy," stated Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová, who took part in the event as well as Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini. The village of Kalište was burnt down on March 18, 1945. The German units killed 46 locals. Today, it is a national cultural monument containing a memorial dedicated to the victims, a preserved chapel and two renovated houses. The commemorative event has been held annually since 2006.
