Thousands dying due to polluted air in regional capitals

Polluted air in Slovak regional capitals lead to over 4,000 premature deaths per year, according to experts at the Sustainable Alternatives Centre (or CEPTA), who have analysed the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute's (SHMU) data on the volume of dust particles and nitrogen oxides in the air. In Bratislava as many as 1,580 people die prematurely due to polluted air every year, while the figure in Košice is 990, in Prešov 410, in Banská Bystrica 340, in Žilina 310, in Trnava 240 and in Trenčín 190. No figures were available for Nitra. CEPTA head Daniel Lešinský said the results are alarming, and called for adequate finances, including from EU funds, to be allocated as soon as possible to local governments to address the problem. The organisation recommends introducing effective measures and employing the best accessible technologies in public transport, industry and the energy sector.
