Slovaks eat less bread

Slovakia achieved historically the lowest consumption of bread per capita. According to the Statistics Office, per capita consumption of bread in Slovakia was 34.5 kilograms in 2018, while at the turn of the millennium, in 2000, it was over 50 kilograms. In the 1980s, it was even around 70 kilograms, which is twice as much as it is today. "We see behind this constant decline new trends in eating habits, a very wide range of bakery products on offer, but paradoxically also the rising purchasing power of the population," said Tatiana Lopúchova, Chairperson of the Slovak Association of Bakers, Confectioners, and Pasta Producers (SZPCC).
