Hauliers’ strike aftermath: Transport Ministry presents its offer

On Monday, the Transport and Construction Ministry presented two draft toll discounts to representatives of two organisations of road carriers, who were on strike at the beginning on January. According to the Ministry, one of the organisations - ČESMAD Slovakia - is ready to accept one of the offers while the other - Union of Slovakia's Hauliers (UNAS) - declined the offer, explaining that they would discuss it first.

The first offer is a straightforward copy of ČESMAD's request. The annual volume of discounts granted in this alternative would be €8.6 million. According to the director general of the Road Transport Unit at the Transport Ministry, Peter Varga, this offer would generate more than twice the volume of discounts for hauliers, while the vast majority of discounts would still be given to Slovak carriers. The second option is less demanding in terms of administration. "Depending on how many kilometres they drive this year, they'll get into the volume discount next year. And then all next year they will have a discount from the first kilometre throughout the whole number of kilometres," said Varga, adding that the value of the discounts would amount to €6.9 million in this case, which is approximately €3 million more than the current situation.
