Leaders of EU member states have agreed that the European Commission (EC) should work on the recovery fund, as they are aware of the fact that the fund is desirable, informed the Foreign Affairs Ministry's press department following a video-conference in which Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovič (OLaNO) also took part. The recovery fund should be big enough and targeted at the sectors and parts of Europe that will be most affected by the crisis, said the ministry. "The easiest way is to use the options we already have. Time is money. We need to have the courage to make steps forwards and adopt decisions quickly to show people that the European project is able to help in times of crisis," said Matovič.
According to the ministry, the European Commission should present a concrete proposal in early May. Before that, the European Union wants to map out the impacts of the crisis on the economies of individual member states. Matovič said we expect from the EC to be more instrumental in public procurement of medical supplies. "What we need now are fast supplies," he noted.
