President: Law on environmental protection must be enforceable

Law-enforcement issues and concealing of geological reports and opinions are the biggest problems when it comes to old environmental burdens in Slovakia, said President Zuzana Čaputová following her meeting with Environment Minister Ján Budaj (OLaNO) on Tuesday.

Although the current legislation provides for creating financial resources for environmental remediation after a company ceases its operation in the area, the reality in Slovakia is that this is not happening. According to Čaputová, the companies aren't even sanctioned for this and state authorities often turn a blind eye to the issue. "Therefore, it must be possible to enforce the law in the area of environmental protection as well," she stressed.

According to Budaj, there are some 2,000 sites of environmental burden recorded in Slovakia that have been overlooked for years. He announced that he plans to categorise them and set ones that need to be dealt with urgently as priorities.
