Mazak: Independence of judiciary at lowest rating ever

The independence of the Slovak judiciary is at its lowest rating ever, Judicial Council Chair Jan Mazak said in a statement commenting on the 2020 EU Justice Scoreboard, noting that this is joyless reading and these are incontestable facts that need to be accepted as a warning, help and challenge. According to Mazak, a devalued rule of law directly endangers the interests of Slovakia as a member state of the European Union. Mazak further said that the devalued rule of law also hinders the proper fulfilment of international obligations, creates an atmosphere of mistrust and brings about unwanted costs. "If justice doesn't work, then everyone will think twice before coming to Slovakia to invest, work, produce, do science and research, and at the same time people will leave the country. For a better and fairer world," said Mazak.
The European Commission published on Friday (July 10) the 2020 EU Justice Scoreboard comparing the efficiency, quality and independence of judiciary systems in all EU member states. According to the data, the perception of the independence of the judiciary among people in several member states continues to deteriorate. Slovakia also belongs to this group. The Slovak judiciary is in last place, with society's confidence in its independence below 20 percent.
