President Zuzana Čaputová ended her two-day visit to the Banská Bystrica region on Wednesday. Besides visiting tourist spots such as the historical forest railway in Čierny Balog, she also visited the village of Predajná, which has been bedevilled for decades by a toxic landfill of gudrons. Gudrons, otherwise known as acid sludges, are a waste acid tar, a toxic by-product from refining crude oil, dating back to the socialist era. According to the president, this landfill is one of the worst among almost 2,000 environmental burdens still plaguing Slovakia, as this toxic waste poses a danger to both the environment and its inhabitants. Čaputová also discussed the issue with Environment Minister Ján Budaj (OĽaNO). She pledged to monitor the case and help the village seek a definitive solution to the problem.
