European Parliament awarded the 2020 Sakharov Prize for human rights to the Belarusian opposition movement and its leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who have been protesting for months against President Alexander Lukashenko. Slovak MEPs appreciate this decision. "The citizens of Belarus are fighting for what we did in 1989. Standing in the face of police brutality with bare hands, they demand freedom and democracy," stated Ivan Štefanec from EPP fraction. Robert Hajšel from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats said that the Belarusian people deserve our admiration and, at the same time, the privilege to decide their future fate freely.
