SNS to join Voice in calling for snap election referendum, PS against it

The extra-parliamentary Slovak National Party (SNS) will halt its own initiative regarding a referendum calling for a snap general election, and will join the one announced by Voice-SD leader Peter Pellegrini on Monday (January 18th). The extra-parliamentary Voice-SD party is proposing the formation of a joint petition committee for a referendum on an early general election. Pellegrini on Monday asked the Trade Union Confederation, the Slovak Pensioners Union and the Slovak Association of Anti-fascist Fighters, as well as opposition political parties, to join the initiative and nominate their representatives for the committee. It should be set up within the next few days and initiate the first specific steps to collect signatures for the petition.

Another extra-parliamentary party, Progressive Slovakia (PS), has rejected Voice-SD's proposal, characterising the potential collecting of signatures during countrywide testing for coronavirus as gambling with people's health. Although PS leader Irena Bihariova thinks that the Government is failing to cope with the pandemic, she stated that an early election amid the coronavirus crisis wouldn't help Slovakia.
