Mental health of Slovak university students declines

The mental health of university students deteriorated during the Covid-19 crisis, according to research from December 2020 carried out by Comenius University in Bratislava on a sample of 1,800 students. According to psychiatrists, young adulthood is only seemingly a happy period, in fact there are many risks involved. One third of university students experience severe symptoms of depression, and one in five university students suffers from long-term increased anxiety. As many as 18.6 percent of students report having been diagnosed with a mental disorder in the past. "Compared to 2018, we see an increase of about a third," said psychologist Michal Hajdúk from Comenius University. On Wednesday, the Slovak government agreed on establishing the Government Council for Mental Health. According to the material presented by the Healthcare ministry, the key role of the council will be to co-ordinate the state policy in the field of mental health and create strategic documents. It will also address the training of mental health professionals and services, as well as mental health research.
