More than 585,000 people signed the petition calling for a referendum on an early election and the signatures were submitted to the Presidential Palace by members of the petition committee on Monday. President Zuzana Caputova will announce her next course of action after her office validates that the petition met all the criteria under the Slovak Constitution. About 50 employees of the President's Office are due to verify the validity of the signatures.
The President is required to call for the referendum within 30 days of the petition being submitted to her, provided that the petition garnered at least 350,000 signatures. If the President decides to challenge any of the referendum questions in the Constitutional Court, the verdict should be handed down within 60 days and the referendum held within 90 days.
The petition was initiated by opposition Smer-SD party, joined by non-parliamentary Voice-SD and Slovak National Party, all of which claim that the referendum is civic and apolitical. The initiative has received support also from the Confederation of Labour Unions (KOZ).
