Caputova in UN: Fight against climate change needs to shift to higher gear

In her video speech addressing the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Slovak President Zuzana Caputova urged the international community to take more decisive and swifter measures in the fight against climate change.

Caputova cited the August report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which established that the world is warming at an even quicker pace than previously estimated. "We must decouple economic growth from the degradation we have been causing to the planet - and support those most affected, those forced out of their homes by floods or drought, and those losing jobs as we close down the most polluting factories. The Green Climate Fund must be properly funded and accessible," added Caputova.

At the same time, Čaputová condemned vaccination egoism, which, according to her, "is a political failure and will accomplish nothing but postpone the end of the COVID-19 pandemic while giving the virus more time to mutate into new and deadlier strains". At the same time she added that vaccines must be accessible to all and Slovakia will continue supporting the COVAX effort.
