President asks for hard lockdown

President Zuzana Caputova voiced her demand for an overall lockdown. In her statement on Tuesday, she admitted it would be unfair to the vaccinated but it is necessary. “We need to stop spreading lies, beating around the bush about COVID and listen to experts. They say it clearly … we need a lockdown,” stated the President. She pointed to the fact Slovakia is the worst in the world in the number of newly infected people per million inhabitants. A three-week lockdown for everyone was proposed by the Health Ministry and the consilium of experts on Monday. Prime Minister’s spokesperson Lubica Janikova said on Monday that Eduard Heger (OLaNO) is contemplating the option of a three-week lockdown for all inhabitants in Slovakia. According to Heger, Slovakia should go into lockdown without delay, so as to be able to enjoy a calmer Christmas later and relax restrictions for tourism during the winter holidays. The Health Ministry spokesperson Zuzana Eliasova informed on Monday that the highest-priority health problem bedevilling Slovakia is the shortage in personnel trained to operate artificial lung ventilation. "The fact is that beds with the lung ventilation capability are filling up," added Eliasova. According to the latest statistics, 258 patients need lung ventilation at the moment and there are 450 artificial lung ventilation devices in total.
