Slovak man charged with the murder of a young teacher in Ireland

The district court in the Irish town of Tullamore has charged 31-year-old Slovak Jozef Puška with the premeditated murder of Ashling Murphy, a young teacher and musician. Murphy was killed on the afternoon of Jan. 12 while she was jogging. Police say the 23-year-old primary school teacher tried to fight off her attacker using a set of keys. Their investigation led to a hospital in Dublin where a man checked in on Thursday with stab wounds. Puška was arrested as he was discharged from a Dublin hospital. The father of three denies guilt but remains in custody. He can only be released on bail by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ireland. A court hearing is scheduled for the end of January. The Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson Juraj Tomaga said that Slovakia was closely monitoring the case, however, the Slovak Embassy in Dublin has not yet received a request for assistance from the citizen concerned, directly or indirectly either through the Irish authorities or his lawyer.
