Reactions to Zelensky’s speech to Slovak Parliament

In reaction to a speech delivered by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Slovak Parliament through a video conference on Tuesday, Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) said that Slovakia would continue to do its utmost to ensure that Ukraine wins the current war and Russia is defeated. He added: "If democratic countries keep up their aid to Ukraine, if Ukraine gets the weapon systems it needs, it will be able to drive the Russian army back to where it was before February 24."

Opposition leader and Smer-SD chair Robert Fico, on the other hand, said that although his party has no problem with any foreign president addressing the Slovak Parliament, the party takes issue with what the Ukrainian head of state said in his speech. Fico rejects the notion that Slovakia should be supplying military armaments to Ukraine, because, he said, "it's necessary to do the utmost for peace and not for prolonging the war". Fico added that if Smer-SD had been in the Government, the party would have helped every refugee fleeing the war, but not those driving luxury cars who came to stay in expensive hotels.

Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok said that Robert Fico did not attend Zelensky's speech because "he is ashamed" of what he has been saying to Ukrainian mothers and families of war victims since the war began. "Peace will be negotiated once the Russians stop killing civilians and withdraw their troops," Korcok said, adding that only then will diplomacy come into play.
