A Slovak-Polish couple in the UK sentenced for human trafficking

A Slovak-Polish couple who for years have been trafficking young Roma from Slovakia to Bristol, England, was sentenced on Wednesday to a total of 25 years in prison. Slovak Maros Tancos, and Polish Joanna Gomulska, both 46, kept the victims as “prisoners” in squalor in the house in Bristol and subjected them to beatings and death threats, a court heard. The convicts trafficked at least 29 vulnerable people to the UK, some of whom had been brought up in children's homes in Slovakia. They promised them a better life in Britain. However, after arriving in the UK, the young Roma were stripped of their passports and forced to work in the man's car wash or nail salon. They never received the money they were promised. According to investigators, the couple spent the funds in casinos or on expensive cars. The abuse went on for almost a decade.
