Parliament okays new media law

Video sharing platforms will be included in the regulatory framework for audiovisual media services. This is one of the most significant changes brought by the new law on media services that will replace the current law on broadcasting and retransmission and the so-called digital broadcasting law. The law was submitted by the Culture Ministry and MPs approved it on Wednesday with several amendments. The reason for the comprehensive change is the insufficient regulatory framework that the current legislation allows with regard to the development of audiovisual services. The share of multimodal broadcasting in the television programme will also increase. The public service broadcaster RTVS will have to ensure that all programmes on each television programme service are subtitled for the hearing impaired, interpreted into or in Slovak sign language, and that at least 50 per cent of the programmes broadcast are accompanied by a voice commentary for the blind. The legislative amendment is also intended to simplify and clarify property and personnel relations related to the media. The law is due to enter into force on 1 August.
