European Parliament Budget Committee not impressed by Slovakia's bid

The European Parliament's Committee for Budgets recommended the European Parliament not to support Martin Klus' bid for an auditor's post in the European Court of Auditors (ECA) on Wednesday. Following Klus' hearing, 20 Committee members voted against his candidacy, no one voted in favour and three members abstained. The mandate of previous Slovak ECA member, Ladislav Balko, ended on May 6, 2022. In 2016-20, Martin Klus served as a lawmaker and as the Foreign Affairs Ministry's state secretary in 2020-22. As of September 2022, he became a rank-and-file lawmaker again. President Zuzana Caputova has asked interim Premier Eduard Heger to have the Government withdraw the nomination of Martin Klus for the post. According to her spokesperson Martin Strizinec, the president warned the prime minister of possible risks for Slovakia's reputation in advance, although the Government did not need the president's consent to approve the nomination.
