Most Slovaks approve Slovakia's EU membership

Almost 70 percent of Slovaks agree with Slovakia's membership in the European Union. More than a third admit that the country could or should leave the EU in the future. This is according to a survey published by the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia.

The survey results showed an increase in negative perceptions of the EU, as well as a widespread view that Slovakia would be better able to face the future if it were outside the EU. "At the same time, we see a growing polarisation of EU supportive and EU rejecting attitudes. The rise in negative sentiment is also reflected in trust in the EU and its institutions," the Eurocommission concluded. It noted that compared to Slovakia, the EU is perceived more positively among the population.

Rising prices, inflation and the cost of living are perceived by Slovaks as the most significant problem. It was chosen as one of the two main problems by up to two thirds of the population. "This issue is also perceived as the biggest problem in the EU27, but fewer Europeans named it compared to Slovakia," the Commission said. The second area perceived by Slovaks as the most problematic is energy supply.

The survey also points to low trust in key constitutional institutions such as the Slovak Parliament and Government. According to the results, only 14 percent of Slovaks trust them. They also have little trust in the courts, the police or the army.
