Conference to assess Slovakia's foreign and European policy

Slovakia is part of the West in terms of geography, mentality and the economy, interim Premier Eduard Heger stated at the 21st annual conference to assess Slovakia's foreign and European policy on Monday. Heger noted in this regard that given a "new era" in the global world and the intensity of disinformation, it's necessary to emphasise where Slovakia belongs. According to the premier, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the global scene and put it into a new era, which, among other impacts, has changed the relation between domestic and foreign policy. "Whatever decision you make in domestic policy automatically has an impact on global policy and whatever decision you make in global policy automatically has an impact in the domestic field," he remarked. Heger at the same time praised Slovakia's membership in the EU, NATO and Schengen area. The premier opined that Slovakia has become a "trendsetter" within the EU in recent years. "We don't only look for a position to agree with in the European Council, we bring up our own agenda," he said, adding that this agenda mainly concerns security and the basic pillars of democracy. Head of Slovak diplomacy Rastislav Káčer stated at the conference that 30 years of Slovakia were successful also thanks to the clear strategic line of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the high professionalism of the foreign service.
