Slovakia rejects European Parliament's call to grant more protection to LGBTI+

The Slovak Parliament has rejected the European Parliament's critical assessment of the standing of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia in the wake of 2022 double murder of two gay men in Bratislava.

According to a resolution passed by the Slovak Parliament on Tuesday, the whole Slovak society, its political representatives, churches, religious organisations and other institutions cannot be held responsible for individual instances of violence and hate crimes. The resolution, sponsored by conservative MPs Anna Andrejuvova and Anna Zaborska (both OLaNO), denounces the European Parliament's assessment as unfair, untrue and misleading. "Similarly disturbing to societal peace and just as insensitive are not only displays of hatred against minorities, but also insensitive promotion of ideologies that fly in the face of the democratic principles of our country and that stand in violation of the cultural legacy of our ancestors, in the spirit of the legacy of Sts. Cyril and Methodius," reads the text approved by the Slovak Parliament.

The resolution also pointed out that the Slovak Parliament had passed an earlier resolution, shortly after the murders, in which it had condemned the terrorist attack. In October 2022, the European Parliament approved a resolution, in which it called on the Slovak government to make sensible progress in the protection of LGBTI+ people after an armed far-right radical murdered two young gay men in Bratislava.
