The European Commission warned Slovakia in two separate letters that the proposed changes in the Criminal Code would put future financing at risk. But the government kept this criticism secret, says opposition party PS.
“We ask for the publication of the EC's reservations, which it sent to the government in the letters of January 24 and February 8. Show the Slovak public how the Commission has repeatedly warned us that this amendment is not in accordance with European law and how, by adopting it, you will de facto trigger proceedings against Slovakia," said Michal Šimečka.
He was joined at a press conference Monday morning by Martin Hojsík, who is a member of the European Parliament for PS.
Hojsik said that the proposed changes are not at all similar to the laws of Austria and the Czech Republic, as the government claimed. But the letter from the Commission with this analysis was kept from the public.
