Education Minister Tomáš Drucker stated after the EU Education, Youth, Culture, and Sport Council meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, that the EU will not regulate mobile phone use in schools, although member states can exchange experiences and offer advice. While some countries, including Slovakia, have implemented bans on phones, especially in elementary schools, the issue remains informal, based on data showing that phone use affects student focus and performance.
Drucker also discussed the potential for a European diploma, supported by Slovakia, to promote student mobility through programs like Erasmus+. However, some countries are concerned that such a move could affect the quality of universities and lead to talent loss. Another topic was the growing challenge of artificial intelligence, with Drucker urging the EU to take a leadership role in supporting AI in education. Additionally, he highlighted Slovakia’s upcoming educational forum in 2025, focusing on AI in education.
