Dr. Jozef Tiso Street [named after the president of the Slovak WW2 fascist state] in the village of Varin (Zilina region) will be renamed to Mons. Jozef Noga Street, according to the decision made by councillors at a meeting of the municipal council on Tuesday.
Nine out of ten councillors present voted in favour of the new name.
Varin has embraced the name change after the Administrative Court in Banska Bystrica accommodated the complaint by the Prosecutor-General's Office and decided that the name Dr. Jozef Tiso Street flies in the face of the law.
Inhabitants of Varin had an opportunity to vote on the name change in a referendum held two years ago, but the plebiscite lacked a quorum with a turnout of only 47.13 percent of registered voters. Only 360 inhabitants voted in favour of the name change, with 1,053 inhabitants voting against.
