EU sues Slovakia over wastewater treatment failures

The European Commission (EC) has filed a lawsuit against Slovakia at the EU Court of Justice for not meeting the wastewater treatment standards set by a 1991 directive. The directive requires municipalities to collect and treat wastewater before releasing it into nature. The case involves 25 Slovak towns that remain non-compliant: 17 towns lack proper secondary treatment, 9 fail to provide additional biological treatment to remove nitrogen or phosphorus, and 1 town meets neither requirement. The EC first issued a formal warning in 2017, followed by a reasoned opinion in 2019.
