The Education Union of Slovakia has announced a state of strike readiness as a response to dissatisfaction with the funding of the education system. According to the Union leader Pavel Ondek, this move aims to pressure the government to meet educators' demands, which may include a strike. Despite multiple meetings between union representatives and the Education Ministry and the Finance Ministry, no agreement has been reached. One key demand is a 10% increase in salary for all education sector employees in 2025 and 2026. Ondek noted that during a meeting on December 16, Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas-SD) discussed possible budget cuts within the ministry, but these would only partially cover the required salary increases. The union also demands unified funding system for all employees in regional education and more flexibility in dividing the state curriculum across grades.
