Slovakia urgently needs to move away from landfilling, as new waste dumps are not being opened and existing ones are filling up, according to Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. He emphasized that the country needs at least three incinerators to address waste management issues.
The Slovak parliament recently delayed the mandatory mechanical-biological treatment (MBÚ) of waste before landfilling until 2027, which Taraba warns could result in fines from the EU. The Minister believes that many lawmakers did not fully understand the long-term consequences of this decision. businesses need to demonstrate responsible waste management, and failure to do so could cost the country in attracting investments.
