80 years since massacre in Nemecka

80 years ago, the mass murder in the village of Nemecka was conducted by Nazi Germany's Einsatzkomanndo 14 and the local Emergency Troops of the Hlinka Guard. About 900 people were shot and burned in the lime factory kiln in the act of suppresion of the Slovak National Uprising. On Friday, 10 January, the commemorative event marked the tragedy with President Peter Pellegrini delivering a speech. The event was held at the monument located in the place of the lime factory kiln.

Between 4 and 11 January 1945, approximately 900 insurgents, racially persecuted persons, women and children were first robbed, then shot in the back of the head and their bodies burned in the kiln of the local lime factory. The ashes and the remains of the bones were dumped in the Hron River, destroying the evidence, and therefore the exact number of victims is unknown. In addition to the German troops, the Emergency Troops of the Hlinka Guard also participated in the executions.
