Where lies the value of ecosystems?

Even though nature protection is slowly becoming one of the world's top priorities, it seems that the real value of nature remains an abstract concept to many people. Why protect it? Why invest in green energy? What benefits would it bring? Although these questions might seem trivial, the answer to them is, in fact, rather complex.

In many scientific papers on the importance of nature protection, the term 'ecosystem services' can be found. What does this term signify? According to the global initiative Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, the term refers to the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human wellbeing. That means anything referred to as an ecosystem service supports, directly or indirectly, our survival and quality of life.

In May 2020, the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic published a paper called "The value of ecosystems and their services in Slovakia." We spoke to one of its authors, Ján Černecký.
