When security keys prove insecure

A few weeks ago a news item about electronic ID cards being exposed to a serious threat was among the headlines. Research carried out by a Czech-Slovak Cyber-security team from Masaryk University in Brno confirmed that electronic signatures can be stolen, even from publically accessible data. From October 31, the Slovak Interior Ministry has been issuing new, safer signature keys, and has blocked all those exposed to a potential threat. So what went wrong with the original signature keys? Zuzana Botiková tried to find out by speaking to the security researcher Petr Švenda from Masaryk University in Brno, whose team discovered the problem. Moreover, we also reached out to the European frontrunner in e-government, Estonia, to learn how they dealt with the same issue.
