For many centuries, people living in the western world have dedicated a few days around the beginning of November to those who have passed away. Nowadays three different special days are observed – the 31st of October and the 1st and 2nd of November – and altogether these three special days are sometimes referred to as Allhallowtide, comprising Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls’ Day. But what is the history of these three days? Why do we celebrate them and how do they differ from each other? An ethnologist from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Katarína Popelková, explains the deeper meening behind the holidays.
