When the shocking news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke out early morning on Thursday, 25 February, many people still wanted to believe that this is not happening. However, the images of fleeing women with their small children, or elderly people heading in the long rows over to the borders, made the war more real. Slovakia, which shares its eastern border with Ukraine became one of the obvious destinations for people fleeing the war. At the same time, ordinary people in Slovakia swiftly mobilised their resources and sought ways to help those struck by a humanitarian crisis. Also in the Bratislava borough of Petržalka, one of the largest concrete tower block estates in the country. Hiding among the tall buildings is a small cultural centre, which for the time being became a centre of the humanitarian aid.

If you want to contribute to one of the humanitarian aid collections, local fundraising events can be found across Slovakia. At the same time, several NGOs got together and created a platform Kto pomoze Ukrajine, or Who will help Ukraine, where they record offers of accommodation or other help. You can also give financial donations to the Red Cross, People in Need or Donio organizations.
