During the last few months Zuzana Botíková has introduced, within the themed pre-Olympic sport cycle, the history and the current state of winter sports in Slovakia. Here you can find all of the features, which lead the Slovak sportspeople to the Winter Games in Sochi.
First, let’s speak a little about independent Slovak sport and its 20-year-long history.

Without knowledge of the past there is no future. This well known quote is true in different life situations, and sport is no exception. In this part of our pre-Olympic themed cycle we will return for a while to the past. We will remember those Slovak Olympians who didn’t compete for Slovakia; however, many current Slovak athletes would like to follow their shining examples.

Before the year 1993, when the Slovak republic was founded, athletes from the region of present day Slovakia, though representing different historical political units, have brought home 32 Olympic medals, out of which eight came from the Winter Olympic Games. Since 1993 only four medals were gained at the Winter Olympics: one gold, two silvers, and one bronze. Now, we will speak to the three athletes, for whom representing Slovakia made their names famous in the prestigious Winter Olympic rallies of the past two decades – in a way, they are like three Slovak present-day winter musketeers.

Slovakia has a long and famous sporting history connected to Olympic ice-rinks and figure skating competition. But what is the situation now, just before the Winter Olympics in Russia?
