Bicycles have been with us for almost two centuries. Over that time, they have become popular all over the world. However, in many regions, bicycles are mostly associated with so-called leisure cycling - a term which stands for cycling for the purpose of recreation, exercise or sport. Nevertheless, the potential of cycling is much bigger. In many cities, urban cycling forms a significant part of total urban mobility. In Vienna, for example, pedestrians and cyclists make up 30% of the total mobility. In Bratislava, on the other hand, urban cycling makes up only 1% of its total mobility. In order to find out more about this topic, I discussed it with sustainable and cycling mobility specialists at the occasion of a workshop on urban cycling development that took place in Bratislava at the beginning of July.
