The Slovak race-walker Matej Tóth ended his very successful sport career with the 14th place in the 50km event at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Over the course of his career, the 38-year-old Slovak athlete stood on the winning pedestal several times and achieved successes that placed him among the best Slovak athletes ever. At 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Matej Tóth won for Slovakia gold medal in the 50km race-walking event. He won hearts of fans also thanks to his good mood and modesty. Matej Tóth originally announced that he would be ending his career after the 2020 Olympics and when the Olympics got postponed due to the pandemic, he reevaluated his decision. During his last race-walking Olympic "fifty", he was at the front for a long time, but at approximately 30th km he experienced a crisis which pushed him out of the medal battle. After the Friday race, Matej Tóth admitted that the final kilometres of the Olympic track in Sapporo were quite emotional. "The emotions were just as strong as in Rio, yet the joy of success was missing. I am proud of my 26-year long career, but at the same time, I am glad that it is all over for me," stated Tóth for the atletika.sk website.
