Sagan wins world championship again

Slovak road cyclist Peter Sagan become the first cyclist in history to win three consecutive World Championships. On Sunday, in Bergen, Norway, he was in the middle of the peloton throughout the entire race but defeated all his opponents including the second Norwegian Alexander Kristoff in the final sprint. "Kristoff went for glory inside the final 1km but with 50m to go, Sagan stormed through and took the title in dramatic circumstances with a perfectly timed bike throw," wrote Eurosport on its website. "I am not sure, whether it changes anything in the world, but it is nice," said the Slovak after the race, adding that this was the most difficult title to earn as the race was unpredictable. "It is amazing, because Peter has rewritten the history of both world cycling as well as Slovak sport. Even last year, many said that he was one of the most successful Slovak athletes, and today we can say that he is the most successful one." said Peter Privara, president of the Slovak Cycling federation.

Sagan's third title came after a season which the Slovak daily SME described as peculiar. Peter was dominant, earned wins, including his 100th stage win in Quebec, Canada in September, but did not win any of the mayor classic races. Moreover he did not finish the Tour de France, after a controversial decision by the jury, which disqualified him after a crash with Mark Cavendish. Thus he did not have a chance to earn the sixth consecutive title of the best sprinter on the Tour.
