The crisis manager failed to manage a major crisis

Interior Minister Tomáš Drucker (a Smer-SD nominee), who was considered a crisis manager, wasn't able to calm the situation in society down, said political analyst Pavol Baboš, quoted by the TASR press agency. Drucker announced his resignation on Monday, stating that while he was expected to reduce polarisation in society by ousting Police Chief Tibor Gašpar, he considers such a move to be wrong and unfair, and he would rather resign. According to Baboš, Drucker demonstrated a lack of political responsibility, as the public demand for Gašpar's ouster wasn't about finding proof against the latter, but about the lack of public trust towards him.

Political analyst, Juraj Marušiak considers that this resignation is a very unpleasant situation for the strongest governing coalition party Smer. "I don't know whether the police chief is so politically strong, whether he has a strong backing that didn't allow Drucker to act against him, or what the motive is for such an attitude," said Marušiak. He doesn't believe that the political situation in society - involving public rallies against Gašpar after the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak - will be calmed down by Drucker's resignation.

The police chief keeping his post raises speculations on his real power, according to political analyst Ján Baránek. "After the double murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and his girlfriend Martina Kušnírová, the Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák fell, Prime Minister Robert Fico and his government fell, another Interior Minister now falls, but the Police Chief remains, although the call for his resignation is one of the first issued. It raises legitimate questions, whether the fear of what could happen if he left would override all other circumstances," said Baránek.
