Fire in Štiavnica: plans for repairing works starts

The way the people helped was great, now it's the government's turn said Martin Macharik, owner of a company that also repairs historic houses, local MP and businessman for the DenníkN daily. Interim Prime Minister Eduard Heger promised the interim government will find finances for the repairs.

Slovak Culture Ministry is holding talks on possible expert and material assistance from UNESCO. The ministry posted on a social network that in this matter, it is communicating with Anna Plassat Murinova, the permanent delegate of the Slovak Republic to UNESCO in Paris. "A Czech partner also selflessly offers us immediate expert and material help. In this case we communicate with the National Museum general director," they added.

The current state of the monuments is being monitored by Monuments Office general director Pavol Ižvolt. In reaction to the crisis situation, Czech President Petr Pavel offered help in restoring the destroyed and damaged monuments in Banská Štiavnica, offering mainly professional restoration capacities. “I really appreciate this manifestation of solidarity," said Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová in her reaction. The head of state believes that Banska Stiavnica will be restored to its original, pre-fire shape as soon as possible.

The fire broke out on Saturday morning in a historical building in the centre of Banská Štiavnica, one of Slovakia's UNESCO towns. It gradually expanded and damaged seven buildings. The firefighters extinguished the fire the following night.
