125th anniversary of the birth of the author of “The Earth Sings”

October 14th marked 125 years since the birth of the Czech photographer and filmmaker Karel Plicka. For over 70 years, he took pictures of people living in remote Slovak villages while collecting local songs. In 1933, he shot "The Earth Sings"- the first sound film in the history of Slovak cinematography. During the time of the Slovak state, a Nazi allied country, he worked in the Czech capital, Prague, where he became one of the founders and the first dean of the now prestigious FAMU, the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts. He returned to Slovakia in 1945, died in Prague in 1987 and was buried with his wife in the National Cemetery in Martin, northern Slovakia. It is possible to learn about his life and work in Karel Plicka museum in the village of Blatnica, close to Martin (which is, surprise-surprise, currently closed due to technical difficulties).
