Jon Fosse and Slovakia

Jon Fosse and Slovakia

Jon Fosse. That’s the name of the 2023 Nobel prize laureate in literature. In 2017, he held a masterclass at the Theatre Institute in Bratislava as it published a selection of his dramas for the first time in Slovak. Nevertheless, the very first book by Jon Fosse in Slovak was published 4 years prior to the masterclass. Who and why introduced Jon Fosse to Slovak readers?

The year 2023 saw Jon Fosse becoming the Nobel Prize laureate for literature. This Norwegian author has a Slovak connection as his wife Anna comes from Bratislava. Together, they live partly in an Austrian village close to the Slovak border, and partly in Norway. As they love music, they attend concerts performed by the Slovak Philharmonic. Back in 2017, it was possible to meet Jon Fosse in the streets of Bratislava. He was the patron of the New drama festival for contemporary theatre. Not only did he hold a masterclass at the event, but he also launched a selection of his drama works for the first time ever in the Slovak language. The translation was written by his wife, Anna Fosse.
