"The school unions require a 25% increase in teachers' salaries as of January 2017," reads the declaration signed by the teachers' unions and associations on Thursday. In late May, a 6 percent pay rise for teachers was announced with a possible rise again next year. Apart from the hike in salaries, the unions suggest more changes in the education system and with its financing. The Slovak Teachers Initiative already announced a protest march for July 1, when the Slovak presidency of the EU Council starts. "We want to remind our government that the European Commission has been advising it to increase the attractiveness of a job of a teacher since 2012," said Branislav Kočan of the Slovak Teachers Initiative.
